SPRING EDITION 2025

Gräfin Geschwitz (Alice Roberts), Lulu (Louise Brooks), and Dr. Schön (Fritz Kortner) in Die Büchse der Pandora (1929)
Note from the Editors
We are pleased to present a new dossier on G.W. Pabst's Die Büchse der Pandora (Pandora's Box) as part of our ongoing Weimar Classics series. We thank Shoshana Schwebel of the University of British Columbia for curating this dossier. Related to it, Brenda Benthien reviews a new experimental essay film titled "Pandoras Vermächtnis" (Pandora's Legacy) that explores Pabst's unknown personal life. Interest in Pabst has surged in the United States since Daniel Kehlmann's translation of his biographical novel Lichtspiel under the title of "The Director." It's a good time, as Brenda writes, to revisit his films.
